Project 4

Anne Frank

Early Life

Holocaust victim and famous diarist Anne Frank was born Annelies Marie Frank on June 12, 1929, in Frankfurt, Germany. Her mother was Edith Frank, and her father, Otto Frank, was a lieutenant in the German army during World War I, later becoming a businessman in Germany and the Netherlands. Frank also had a sister named Margot who was three years her senior.

The Franks were a typical upper middle-class German-Jewish family living in a quiet, religiously diverse neighborhood near the outskirts of Frankfurt. However, Frank was born on the eve of dramatic changes in German society that would soon disrupt her family's happy, tranquil life as well as the lives of all other German Jews.

Due in large part to the harsh sanctions imposed on Germany by the 1919 Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, the German economy struggled terribly in the 1920s. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, the virulently anti-Semitic National German Socialist Workers Party (Nazi Party) led by Adolph Hitler became Germany's leading political force, winning control of the government in 1933.

"I can remember that as early as 1932, groups of Storm Troopers came marching by, singing, 'When Jewish blood splatters from the knife,'" Otto Frank later recalled. When Hitler became chancellor of Germany on January 20, 1933, the Frank family immediately realized that it was time to flee. Otto later said, "Though this did hurt me deeply, I realized that Germany was not the world, and I left my country forever."

The Franks moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands, in the fall of 1933. Anne Frank described the circumstances of her family's emigration years later in her diary: "Because we're Jewish, my father immigrated to Holland in 1933, where he became the managing director of the Dutch Opekta Company, which manufactures products used in making jam." After years of enduring anti-Semitism in Germany, the Franks were relieved to once again enjoy freedom in their new hometown of Amsterdam. "In those days, it was possible for us to start over and to feel free," Otto recalled.

Anne Frank began attending Amsterdam's Sixth Montessori School in 1934, and throughout the rest of the 1930s, she lived a relatively happy and normal childhood. Frank had many friends, Dutch and German, Jewish and Christian, and she was a bright and inquisitive student.

Nazi Occupation

But that would all change on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland, igniting a global conflict that would grow to become World War II. On May 10, 1940, the German army invaded the Netherlands, defeating overmatched Dutch forces after just a few days of fighting. The Dutch surrendered on May 15, 1940, marking the beginning of the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. As Frank later wrote in her diary, "After May 1940, the good times were few and far between; first there was the war, then the capitulation and then the arrival of the Germans, which is when the trouble started for the Jews."

Beginning in October 1940, the Nazi occupiers imposed anti-Jewish measures on the Netherlands. Jews were required to wear a yellow Star of David at all times and observe a strict curfew; they were also forbidden from owning businesses. Frank and her sister were forced to transfer to a segregated Jewish school. Otto Frank managed to keep control of his company by officially signing ownership over to two of his Christian associates, Jo Kleiman and Victor Kugler, while continuing to run the company from behind the scenes.

On June 12, 1942, Frank's parents gave her a red checkered diary for her 13th birthday. She wrote her first entry, addressed to an imaginary friend named Kitty, that same day: "I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone, and I hope you will be a great source of comfort and support."

Weeks later, on July 5, 1942, Margot received an official summons to report to a Nazi work camp in Germany. The very next day, the family went into hiding in makeshift quarters in an empty space at the back of Otto Frank's company building, which they referred to as the Secret Annex. They were accompanied in hiding by Otto's business partner Hermann van Pels as well as his wife, Auguste, and son, Peter. Otto's employees Kleiman and Kugler, as well as Jan and Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, provided food and information about the outside world.

The families spent two years in hiding, never once stepping outside the dark, damp, sequestered portion of the building. To pass the time, Frank wrote extensive daily entries in her diary. Some betrayed the depth of despair into which she occasionally sunk during day after day of confinement. "I've reached the point where I hardly care whether I live or die," she wrote on February 3, 1944. "The world will keep on turning without me, and I can't do anything to change events anyway." However, the act of writing allowed Frank to maintain her sanity and her spirits. "When I write, I can shake off all my cares," she wrote on April 5, 1944.

In addition to her diary, Frank filled a notebook with quotes from her favorite authors, original stories and the beginnings of a novel about her time in the Secret Annex. Her writings reveal a teenage girl with creativity, wisdom, depth of emotion and rhetorical power far beyond her years.

Captured by the Nazis

On August 4, 1944, a German secret police officer accompanied by four Dutch Nazis stormed into the Secret Annex, arresting everyone that was hiding there. They had been betrayed by an anonymous tip, and the identity of their betrayer remains unknown to this day. The residents of the Secret Annex were shipped off to Camp Westerbork, a concentration camp in the northeastern Netherlands, and arrived by passenger train on August 8, 1944. They were transferred to the Auschwitz death camp in Poland in the middle of the night on September 3, 1944. Upon arriving at Auschwitz, the men and women were separated. This was the last time that Otto Frank ever saw his wife or daughters.

After several months of hard labor hauling heavy stones and grass mats, Anne and Margot were again transferred during the winter to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany. Their mother was not allowed to go with them, and Edith Frank fell ill and died at Auschwitz shortly thereafter, on January 6, 1945.

At Bergen-Belsen, food was scarce, sanitation was awful and disease ran rampant. Frank and her sister both came down with typhus in the early spring and died within a day of each other sometime in March 1945, only a few weeks before British soldiers liberated the camp. Anne Frank was just 15 years old at the time of her death, one of more than 1 million Jewish children who died in the Holocaust.

Otto Frank was the only member of his immediate family to survive. At the end of the war, he returned home to Amsterdam, searching desperately for news of his family. On July 18, 1945, he met two sisters who had been with Anne and Margot at Bergen-Belsen and delivered the tragic news of their deaths.

Problems and issues

Problems and issues

Pollution is one of the main problems that human beings have to face day by day. The main causes that pollute the environment are excess of smoke, deforestation and not recycling. These three causes hurt not only our lives if not the animals and everything related to the planet. Each of these causes are destroying our planet and causing the death of different species.
The excess of smoke causes death if it’s breathead at high levels, it is cause by cars and the quantity of factories in different places around the world. It emits dangerous chemicals and affects the inmune system. Besides that, the ozone layer is destroyed by this kind of pollution, for that reason, the weather is constantly changing.
Another cause is deforestation, which destroys the hábitat of different animals. It accelerates the warming of the earth, which contributes to the land not being suitable for farming. Without tres the air is not purified and we are more exposed to different diseases like the flu and several viruses in the air.
Finally not recycling affects the environment because all the garbage is thrown to different places like rivers, parks, reserves, beaches and other unspoiled places. This problema affects everything for example the smell of garbage can be toxic. That would be dangerous to the lungs of humans causing death or a big problema in our organism. Another thing is if the people throw garbage into the rivers many marine species die and the damage is irreversible.
We can help the enviromentnot throwing garbage in public áreas and sorting wastes in order. Besides that, planting tres around the country in strategic places. We can avoid using cars everyday or encouraging the use of electric cars, with these measures our planet can be a better place to live.

week 13

PYRAMIDS OF EGYPT

The pyramids of Egypt are the most famous pyramids in the entire world. These great monuments were built by the ancient Egyptians over four thousand years ago.

Many people like historians, and archeologists are trying to figure out how these pyramids were built, but they can not.   Until today the pyramids of  Egypt  remain one of the greatest mysteries in the history.

The most famous pyramids of egypt are located in Giza. The Giza pyramids were built during the fourth dinasty by King Khufu who built the biggest pyramid in the world.

Other Pyramids

Although the 3 pyramids of Giza are the most famous, a total of 138 pyramids exist in Egypt, and many of these are very remarkable. The step pyramid, the red pyramid, and the bend pyramid are good examples of those. Until today, the pyramids of egypt continue to reveal secrets, and wonders that puzzles the world, for this reason these pyramids are considere one of the world´seven wonders.

The red pyramid is one of the most important among the pyramids of Egypt. The engineers had learnt a lot from their previuos construction experiences at Meidum and Dahshur.

“King Nubkhaure Amenemhat II, son of king Senusret I and Queen Nefru. He was the third king of the 12th dynasty, and ruled ancient Egypt for 35 years. No much information are available about his reign. The throne name Nubkaure means “Golden are the souls of Ra”.           ( http://www.pyramids-of-egypt.com/)

The other one is “King Senusret III built his pyramid at Dahshur directly on desert sand. Mud-brick was used to construct the core of the pyramid which took a horizontal step structure. The seams were filled with sand instead of mortar. Local limestone that came from the city of Turah was used to construct the outer casing”. ( http://www.pyramids-of-egypt.com/)

Aliens built the pyramids?

Many people wonder  if aliens built the pyramids, and this following piece of news was used as a solid proof that they had to do with it. The news of a perfectly preserved alien mummy that was found  buried in a small pyramid near Lahun. The body was found is about 160 centimeters tall and the pyramid where it was found is believed to belong to King Senurest II´s wife.

The secret of the greats Pyramid:

It is taught in schools around the world that the pyramids of Egypt were built as tombs for the pharaoh kings, and that the ancient Egyptians built those great pyramids using very simple tools and techniques. Such information was confirmed by several historians and archeologist.

In my opinion these pyramids are so stunning, because is very awesome to think the way that the egypcian built it, just using pieces of rock and their bare hands.

I love this kind of structures because it keep so much history about how people lived and survived in that time. Besides that show us that the human being is very clever no matter time, place or the situation.

In conclusion the human being is able to live and adopt themselves in any place around the planet.

week 12

Geisha

A geisha is a Japanese traditional artist, whose work constitutes, after learning that could be both from age 15 or kindergarten, in entertaining at parties, meetings or banquets as exclusively male or female and mixed. Geisha began their work cleaning the houses of other geishas and performing different tasks, then the girl who wants to become a geisha must pass a test of dance to continue with the next step.

The appearance of a geisha is amazing, their makeup, wardrobe and hairstyle are a different culture, it includes a series of rules that these women must meet to be part of this social circle.

The traditional makeup of the geisha apprentices consists of a White base originally made of lead, the use of read lipstick and red and black trim around the eyes and eyebrows.  The makeup is applied before to avoid dirtying the kimono dress. First, a substance of oil or wax called bintsuke - abura, is applied to the skin. Then, rice powder is mixed with water to form a paste that is applied with a brush of bamboo. The white makeup covers the face, neck, chest and hands, with two or three areas unpainted (forming a "W" or "V") near the nape, to accentuate this erotic area, and an outdoor area of skin around the hair, which creates the illusion of a mask. The "W" is used with the formal kimono (black).

Once the base is applied, a sponge is spent on the face, neck, chest, neck to absorb excess moisture and achieve uniformity at the base. Then the eyes and eyebrows are highlighted. Traditionally used charcoal, but nowadays modern cosmetics are used. The eyebrows and the edge of the eyes are painted black; the maiko also used red around the eyes. The lips are painted with a  small brush simulating an outline of cordate, sensual lips by high and very round, with small variations from district to district. The color comes in a small stick that is mixed with water. Crystallized sugar is added to give shine to the lips.

Geisha always wear Kimono. The Kimono are colorful and extravagant. Older Geisha wear more muted designs and styles. As they are advancing age and level in the profession, the sleeves become tomesode, shorter and darker color and more elegant cut. The geisha wear low Wood and lacquer sole sandals, called zori and idoor wear only tabi (divided into fingers socks). In snowy areas ehe geishas used wooden clogs, called geta. On the other hand, the kimono of the geico are discrete, uniform and with a very simple print. The fori are shoter and reach the height of the hips.

The Geisha must always be single or can be removed from their work after marriage. Their  work as a geisha does not include sexual activity and is not paid for sex but she can choose this option out of the role as such. The lives of these women are very interesting, there is still this culture in Japan.

Currently  the geishas have returned to their work. This 21st century brought them new employment since they are not wrong views and tradition not only this in Japan has also reached other parts of the world. Geisha ceremony remains the same, learn poetry, theatre, painting, playing the Shamisen, shoulders or sticks drum, flute, dance and the tea ceremony.

Many Geishas are students and with this work they can paid their studies, They can´t have boyfriends, the spectacle of a Geisha costs $2,000 per few hours, they live together as a brotherhood, they have a silence pact the men can speak with them and the Geisha can not report nothing.

The tea ceremony is very beautiful  the geishas wear  the typical clothing and the guests wear black or white kimonos, the geishas playing the Shamisen during the ceremony and they dance around of the guests. You can see the videos in youtube of the tea ceremony everything is peaceful, the men only see and admire the beautiful culture and the elegance of women.

This culture is amazing and if I were to go to Japan I would like to know Geishas and I want to take  picture with this women.

week 11

Pray for Venezuela

I want to tell you about the country where I was born. My country is Venezuela.

Venezuela is a beautiful country, the people are very friendly, the cultural life is very important on different places of the country, there are also bad things in the city, for example, the political system is very bad, the cost of living is high. The situation on these days in my country is unfortunate and this is the reason why I decided to write about it.

Now in Venezuela there is a Government that has increased all the bad things inside the country, like crime, drug trafficking, poverty, hunger, corruption, and many more. Diosdado Cabello, is the president of the National Assembly he was recently accused as the head of the “Cartel de Los Soles” and responsible for drugs trafficked from Venezuela to Europe and other countries.

United States opened a line investigation to different officials of Venezuela by the aforementioned “Cartel”. In addition, it is important to mention that not only it is the cocaine traffic also is the money laundering and the corruption that is handled by senior positions in the Government.

On the other hand, Venezuela has many economic problems; The Dollar price is high and the oil price is going down, popular sectors suffer this due to that the inflation increase and the price of products are going up day by day. For the Venezuelan is very difficult to buy the basics products to eat, the lines to buy in the supermarkets are very huge and foodstuffs basic are scarce.

In February of last year, the Venezuelans took  the streets to protest against the regime of Nicolas Maduro. The president sack the army to the streets to suppress the protest, during the protest many students died and a good number of politician are  prisoners in Venezuelan jails.

The most important event was the detention of Leopoldo López, opposition leader of Venezuela, he is now a political prisoner. The arrest of Leopoldo was without evidence, based on allegations invented, at the direction of a government anxious to silence the opposition movement. López graduated from Harvard is the most noted victim of arbitrary and injustice, but he is not alone. Other noted prisoners include Daniel Ceballos and many more innocents.

Currently in Venezuela has the crime now increased  and the Government doesn’t do anything to solve this important problem. Life is worthless, the people kill for a phone or food; is incredible the  marginality rate and poverty increases every day.

When I think in my country, the feeling is incredible and I want to go back but then I remember all these problems and I say that now is not the time. Here is where I should be by now  to give a better future to my son.

Venezuela needs help from the presidents of other countries. Maybe is necessary an intervention to solve these problems. You can see the situation in my country in external newspapers or on TV. The national newspapers are quiet in the critical situation of the country that generates income to many other countries. The petroleum of Venezuela is sold only to a few countries and is given away to different countries in the world The government prefers to have  ignorant and poor people, that to have another government against.
Venezuelans will continue to fight for our freedom and we will not rest until get it. Governments worldwide must understand that poverty of people does have not positive results for humanity.

Project 3: Design a campaign to raise awareness on the importance of protecting the environment.

Deforestation
Is the permanent destruction of forest in order to make the land available for other uses.
Deforestation occurs around the world, though tropical rainforests are particularly targeted. Countries with significant deforestation include Brazil, Indonesia, Thailand. The country with the most deforestation is Indonesia.
Loss of species
Seventy percent of the world´s plants and animals live in forests and are losing their habitats to deforestation, according to National  Geographic. They lose their habitat and forced to move to new location. Some of them are even pushed to extinction. Our world has lost so many species of plants and animals in last couple of decades.

Solutions to Deforestation
1. curb the felling of trees, by employing a series of rules and laws to govern it.
2. Clear cutting of forests must be banned.
3. cutting must  be replaced by  planting young trees to replace the older ones that were cut.
Good personal hygiene is one of the most effective ways to protect orselves and others.

Causes of deforestation:
- agricultural activities
- logging
- urbanization
- desertification of land
- mining
- fires

Effects
- climate imbalance
- increase in global warming
- soil erosion
- wildlife extinction

week 9

Project 2 (First Part)
  • Research additional cases of people who are making a difference in their communities by getting involved in business and making money.
  • Present the cases explaining the keys that make them successful.

Video#1: Oprah's South African Leadership Academy for Girls

  1. How is Oprah using her money?

She has donated millions of dollars  to various  organization, with  most of her money going to three Foundations: The Angel Network. The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa and Rebuilding the Gulf Coast.

In  2007, the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy opened its doors to academically gifted, underprivileged girls in South Africa. On Saturday, the first class graduated, with a 100 percent pass rate.

  1. Why is Oprah so happy with her new role?

She is happiness and really unexpected being able to step into the mother role, friend, confidant and companion, advisor  for girls. Oprah said: “I didn´t know that I would love it”.

  1. Why is education important for her? And how are students picked for her school?

The education is important for her because, she said that these girls have broken the cycle of poverty in their families, being the first to ho on the college and to do whatever they choose to do-key Word, what they choose to do with their lives, they not longer have to accept the standard that their mother and their father had to bear, because there were not oportunities.

“The education is beginning of the ending of poverty”.

The students are girls with a experience trauma and the hardships ingrained in poverty.

  1. What does closing the gap mean?

I think that Oprah never imagined the reaction when the girls saw the plumbing because it means they can take a shower and she doesn´t have to go to find containers of water they can flush the toilet.

Closing the gap mean because she help to girls that never had  economic resources for to have a good education .

Video #2: Women Entrepreneurs

  1. Why are business skills important for women?

The business skill are important for women because, they are the population you have left. Rwanda in the immediate aftermath of the genocide was 77 percent female. In many places there are women who keep entire families, there are also single mothers and all of them must have business skills.

2.      Share some of the stories of women in the video

In the State Department in Washington and I met an incredibly passionate entrepreneur from Ghana. She sells chocolates. And she had come to Washington, not seeking a handout and not seeking a microloan. She had come seeking serious investment dollars so that she could build the factory and buy the equipment she needs to export her chocolates to Africa, Europe, the Middle East and far beyond -- capital that would help her to employ more than the 20 people that she already has working for her, and capital that would fuel her own country's economic climb.

Gayle went to Afghanistan in 2005 to work on a Financial Times piece, and there she met Kamila, a young women who told me she had just turned down a job with the international community that would have paid her nearly $2,000 a month -- an astronomical sum in that context. And she had turned it down, she said, because she was going to start her next business, an entrepreneurship consultancy that would teach business skills to men and women all around Afghanistan. Business, she said, was critical to her country's future. Because long after this round of internationals left, business would help keep her country peaceful and secure. And she said business was even more important for women because earning an income earned respect and money was power for women.

3.      Why money is power for women?

Money is power for a women because, they never had  respect and never they had earned  an income, they receive more attention when they are introduced to business and earn  money.

Second part: Based on the information from the videos, in-class discussions and activities, presentations, research, answer the following questions:

  1. Does money always mean power?  Why?

I think that money if you can give power but depending on as it is used because it can sometimes destroy the person, in the world there are people with so much money they don't know to do and end making up his own life a hell. currently the money buys everything, people, consciousness, things and for this reason people who have much money believe they have the power.

2.      How does society normally measure success?

Normally the society measures success by the amount of material things that has one person  and should not be so now that success is accompanied by the effort, dedication and commitment to the goals that they have. Many people obtained the material things in a bad way and it is not correct to say that the person is successful.

  1. Margaret Bonnano said: "Being rich is having money; being wealthy is having time." What do you think of this quote?

I think that being rich is not having money, being rich is having time to achieve the goals that we have in life, have peace of mind and confidence in us themselves, nothing serves have money if you need humility and spiritual peace.

  1. How was the research process, in-class presentations, mini-projects and Second project in weeks 6-8? What did you learn?

I during these weeks I learned that we can all make a difference and help, that there are programs to volunteer without having to give money only with our time we can help many people, that the best way to help is to make a difference and that if we want to make a difference not do always the same.
  1. What can you apply to your life from the main activities develop in the last weeks?
I can apply to my life many activities develop in the last weeks, for example:

Do´s and dont´s of a job interview, different volunteer programs to help other people, It was  important  the videos that we saw, people that help the community, I believe that everyone should put in practice with the tools we have to help others.
